No tracking in the app. Ever.

Last updated June 20, 2026.

Roll is built for memories — not for harvesting them. There is no analytics SDK, no crash reporter, no marketing pixel, no third-party tracker of any kind. We don't know what you photograph, when you open the app, or how often you use it.

What stays on your phone

Everything you create with Roll lives only on your device:

  • Original photos you capture
  • The developed (filtered) versions
  • The film style each photo was developed with
  • The capture date and the note you wrote

All of it is stored in Core Data on your phone. None of it is uploaded anywhere. If you delete the app, it's all gone — there is no copy in the cloud.

Permissions Roll asks for

  • Camera — to take photos. The camera feed never leaves your phone.
  • Motion — to detect when you shake your phone to develop a photo.
  • Photos (add-only) — only when you choose to save a developed photo to your iOS Photos library. Roll never reads from your library.

What we don't do

  • No accounts. No sign-up. No login.
  • No analytics (no Firebase, no PostHog, no Mixpanel, no Google Analytics, no Segment, no nothing).
  • No crash reporting SDKs.
  • No advertising. No tracking pixels.
  • No social features, feeds, or shared servers.
  • No cloud backup, no iCloud sync of Roll's data.

The Pro purchase

Roll has an optional one-time Pro upgrade that unlocks customization and re-roll. The purchase itself goes through Apple's App Store. To verify that you've bought it, Roll uses RevenueCat, which handles receipt validation across devices.

For that purpose, RevenueCat receives an anonymous installation ID and your purchase receipt from Apple. It does not receive any of your photos, notes, or personal information. See RevenueCat's privacy policy for what they do with that data.

This website

Everything above is about the Roll iOS app. The marketing site you're reading right now (shotonroll.com) uses Umami to count page views and download-button clicks. Umami is cookieless, doesn't fingerprint visitors, doesn't share data with third parties, and doesn't follow you across sites. We use it to know whether anyone is reading this — nothing more. The app itself sends nothing to Umami.

Children

Roll doesn't collect personal data from anyone, so it doesn't knowingly collect data from children either. The app is suitable for all ages.

Changes

If we ever change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. We will never add tracking, analytics, or any other data collection to the Roll app. That's a hard line.
